Will the Vicente Sotto Hospital Scandal Affect the Image of Filipino Nurses Worldwide?

· Filed Under In the news, Insights

With the recent broadcasting of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) operating room scandal on Youtube and other sites, the Filipino Medical and Nursing profession have, once again, been put into spotlight by the worldwide media.

The controversy stemmed from the medical procedure of the unsuspecting gay patient, reportedly a 39-year florist-employee, that was put on video while a body spray canister was operated off his rectum presumably inserted by his boyfriend in a homosexual act.

The Filipinos doctors and nurses in the operating room were seen in this scandalous video as laughing at the poor gay’s fate in the course of the operation. And to think that there are other unauthorized people in the operating room makes matters worse.

This has outraged the Filipino nation as well as the international community. Videotaping an operation without the patient’s knowledge and consent is considered a violation of human rights and deserve the oncoming charges and the public’s outrage.

The question now is, will this affect the image of our Filipino nurses worldwide. I hope not but only time will tell.
